Embarking on a PhD is a momentous step in a scholar's life, filled with promise and the potential for groundbreaking discoveries. Securing a PhD position, along with necessary financial support, sets the stage for an intense yet rewarding journey. However, the path is fraught with challenges and potential pitfalls that can test the resolve of even the most determined students. This guide aims to provide valuable tips to help navigate these challenges, enabling PhD students to make the most of their experience and enjoy the process.

The format for today’s discussion will be laid out in two parts.  In PART 1 we will explore a few key factors to keep in mind when embarking on a PhD.  This includes an overview of the purpose of the degree, essential skills needed to be a successful doctoral student, the importance of embracing mentorship and independence, coping with pressure and failure, publishing in scientific journals, and tips for effective communication.  For each topic we cover in Part 1 we will introduce the topic and our own personalized advice. In Part 2, we will run through a theoretical 5 year plan and outline what skills are formed over the course of a degree on that timeline.
